Background
Sandy has been playing piano since 4 years old and has been substitute organist for some of the local churches. She currently is a pianist for the Lewisville Bible Church, Lewisville, TX., and teaches piano privately.

She started playing trombone at the age of 12. Her teachers include Leon Brown, Don Baird, and David Ritter. She was Outstanding Brass Performer---Texas UIL 1968. 4 years Texas All-State, 1965-69, earned her BMus ED degree at WTAMU in 1974 and was a member of Tau Beta Sigma, played lead trombone with the WTAMU Stage Band and the Tiffany Brass, principal trombone with the Grand Prairie Symphony, second trombone in the Amarillo Symphony, was Teaching Fellow in Trombone and Euphonium at UNT in 1973-74, principal trombone in the UNT Wind Ensemble 1973-74, and has performed on recordings for jingles.

Sandy is a regular participant in the Online Trombone Journal, she is a member of the International Trombone Association,  International Tuba and Euphonium Association, and Texas Music Educators Association.  She plays bass trombone in the Dallas New Horizons Band and UpSwing, a stage band offshoot from the concert band.

Trombones
She plays a Conn 88HTO-CL tenor trombone, a Conn 36H alto trombone, a Conn 62H independent rotor bass trombone, and a Meinl Weston 451S euphonium.  Her 88H has a .547/.547 slide on it, and she uses Doug Elliott mouthpieces exclusively.

Sandy owned her own flight school in which

Works
Some of Sandy's recitals have included Fantasy by Paul Creston, Sonata for Trombone by Paul Hindemith, the Suites for Violoncello Alone by J. S. Bach/Marsteller, and Concertino Basso For Bass Trombone by Richard Lieb.

A Brief Testimonial
Having pursued a career in aviation, she is a retired 737 Captain for a major airline.  She kept somewhat busy with music, though, by learning to play the bass and banjo and joined a local bluegrass band.  After a while, Sandy began to miss playing the trombone, so she decided to start practicing again. The big void that resulted from leaving the horn in its case is now being filled. (See "Full Circle Chops" in the "Articles" section).

Practice Environment
She lives in a small community in the DFW area. Sometimes, she uses a Yamaha Silent Brass SB5 Personal Studio. So far, she has no complaints from the neighbors.

For timing, she uses a Boss Dr. Beat DB88. She uses it primarily for scale practice and warm-up, although she checks with it regularly to make sure she is playing the proper tempo appropriate for the metronome marking for a solo or excerpt.

Sandy keeps her instruments out of the cases on stands so they will be readily available for access for whatever playing she may decide to do on the spur of the moment. This arrangement is also a friendly reminder to practice, practice, practice.

Other Interests
Sandy plays golf, enjoys biking, motorcycling, kayaking, astronomy, and she has been known to tell fishing stories and do a lot of hangar flying.  Sandy also spends a lot of time on the computer, as well as troubleshooting and fixing, when the computer decides it has operator problems.
